During a meeting between UNESCO Country Representative, Mr. Michel Toto, and the Secretary-General of the National Commission for UNESCO, Professor Hamisi Malebo, discussions centred on advancing strategic coordination and cooperation across UNESCO’s fields of competence, including education, science, culture and communication and information.
The National Commission values its longstanding partnership with UNESCO and remains committed to strengthening coordination across UNESCO’s fields of competence. By working closely together, we can enhance the coherence, reach and impact of our joint efforts in support of Tanzania’s national priorities.

UNESCO highlighted the National Commission’s important role as a key institutional partner in facilitating and strengthening Tanzania’s engagement with UNESCO. The National Commission provides an important platform for coordination between UNESCO, the Government and relevant national stakeholders, helping to connect UNESCO’s global mandate, expertise and programmes with national priorities. This cooperation is particularly important in promoting greater coherence across UNESCO’s fields of competence and in supporting the implementation of shared priorities through stronger coordination, dialogue and partnerships.

The meeting also discussed the proposed Development Partners’ Roundtable on Culture and Heritage for Sustainable Tourism in Zanzibar as one example of the broader cooperation between UNESCO and the National Commission. The initiative seeks to bring partners together around shared priorities and strengthen cooperation in support of Zanzibar’s cultural heritage and sustainable development. The discussions further underscored the importance of continued joint engagement with government institutions, development partners and other stakeholders to advance national priorities and strengthen the impact of UNESCO’s cooperation in Tanzania.
