Engaging directly with displaced students and interacting with teachers, he witnessed first-hand their determination to continue learning and their enthusiasm to participate despite the difficult circumstances facing the country. The visit highlighted the importance of creating safe and supportive learning environments where children can recover lost learning while rebuilding confidence and looking towards the future.

During the visit, he highlighted that, thanks to USD 1 million grant from the Global Partnership for Education, UNESCO will strengthen national education planning and contribute to building a more resilient education system in Lebanon.
Heritage as a driver of recovery
In Tripoli, the Director-General visited Khan Al-Askar, a historic site with significant potential to become a centre for skills development and employment opportunities, particularly for young people and women artisans.
The visit highlighted the potential of heritage to contribute to livelihoods, skills development and creative expressions. UNESCO stands ready to connect the rehabilitation of the site with opportunities that can benefit local populations and create new pathways for young people and women.
The Director-General also visited the Rachid Karami International Fair, the World Heritage property designed by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. Touring key architectural landmarks, including the Grand Cover, Experimental Theatre, Water Tower, Panoramic Restaurant, Monumental Arch and Open-Air Theatre, he highlighted the exceptional architectural and cultural value of the site and its potential to foster creativity, dialogue and a culture of peace for future generations.
He also witnessed a musical performance by the Coral El-Fayhaa and received a commemorative trophy marking the visit.
The Director-General highlighted the allocation of funds from the World Heritage Fund to support urgent conservation work on the Water Tower and strengthen national expertise, underscoring UNESCO’s commitment to safeguarding Lebanon’s heritage while ensuring that it continues to contribute to the country’s cultural and social development.
