UNESCO Peru and the National Institute of Mental Health announce partnership to promote mental health and violence-free schools

The announcement is part of the Campeonas sin Barreras project, implemented by UNESCO Peru in partnership with Fundación Fútbol Más Perú, within the framework of UNESCO’s global Fit for Life program. This initiative promotes sport as a tool for inclusion, equity, and holistic well-being, and is directly aligned with UNESCO’s Health and Well-being Education Strategy, which advances mental and physical health, safe schools, and teacher training.

The partnership will reach its first major milestone on October 25 with the Copa de Campeonas, a socio-sporting event that will bring together more than 300 participants, including adolescents, families, teachers, and partner organizations. The gathering will combine football matches, interactive stations, and cultural activities to highlight girls’ leadership and promote safe, violence-free environments.

Within this framework, the National Institute of Mental Health will lead the mental health stations, designed for students, families, and teachers. These stations—interactive fair-style spaces where different organizations and partners provide guidance, activities, and informational materials—will focus on prevention, self-care, and socio-emotional strengthening, showing how sport and mental health can work together to enhance the well-being of the entire educational community.

The commemoration of International Day of the Girl, which this year the United Nations observes under the theme “The girl I am, the change I lead. Girls on the frontlines of crisis”, and Mental Health Week provide the ideal context to announce this partnership. Both observances highlight the importance of recognizing adolescent girls as agents of change and ensuring they have access to spaces for participation, well-being, and development.

Through this joint effort, the National Institute of Mental Health and UNESCO Peru reaffirm their commitment to guaranteeing the right of children and adolescents to a full, healthy life with equal opportunities.
