Lima, October 26, 2026.– As part of the women’s friendly football match between Alianza Lima and Talleres de Córdoba, Argentina, UNESCO Peru launched the Prepared, Resilient and Organized Communities (Comunidades PRO) campaign and carried out awareness-raising activities at the Alejandro Villanueva Stadium, in the district of La Victoria, to promote public preparedness for the 2026–2027 El Niño phenomenon.

Preparation is urgent in light of climate forecasts. In September 2026, the Multisectoral Commission for the National Study of the El Niño Phenomenon (ENFEN) maintained El Niño Costero alert and indicated a high probability that the phenomenon would reach extraordinary magnitude between September 2026 and January 2027. Furthermore, above-average rainfall is expected during the summer of 2027 along the northern and central coasts and in the northwestern highlands, making it necessary to strengthen preventive measures against potential heavy rainfall, flooding, and river overflows.

For this reason, communities need to anticipate risks. Accessing reliable information, recognizing alerts, and adopting preventive measures are essential to protecting people, schools, essential services, and cultural heritage. In emergency situations, rumors and misinformation spread quickly and can put lives at risk. To counter this, UNESCO promotes Media and Information Literacy, encouraging the public to consult official sources, verify information before sharing it, and make informed decisions.

This initiative is part of UNESCO efforts to strengthen the capacities of individuals and communities to anticipate risks, make informed decisions, and organize themselves in the face of potential emergencies. Through Comunidades PRO, UNESCO brings together actions in education, science, communication and information, and culture to help strengthen public preparedness.
