A three-day UNESCO Bangladesh mission to the Chittagong Hill Tracts brought together journalist capacity-building under the United Nations Electoral Project (BALLOT) with strategic engagement on education, multilingual education, media development, cultural heritage and sustainable local development.
The mission connected UNESCO’s ongoing work in communication and information with discussions on how education, media and culture initiatives can better respond to priorities identified by institutions and communities in Rangamati and Bandarban.
As part of the mission, UNESCO, in partnership with the Press Institute Bangladesh (PIB), organized a three-day training on Artificial Intelligence (AI), Information Integrity, Fact-Checking and Journalist Safety for 35 journalists from Rangamati. The programme strengthened participants’ practical skills in the responsible use of AI in journalism, verification of digital content, information integrity, Media and Information Literacy (MIL), ethical journalism and journalist safety, contributing to professional reporting ahead of the forthcoming local government elections.
The training was inaugurated by Major General (Retd.) Anup Kumar Chakma, Chairman of the Chittagong Hill Tracts Development Board, with Dr. Susan Vize, Head of Office and UNESCO Representative to Bangladesh, attending as a special guest. The closing ceremony brought together Mr. Dipon Talukder Dipu, Chairman of the Rangamati Hill District Council; Mr Md Ayub Bhuiyan, Secretary of the National Press Club; journalists; and local stakeholders, reaffirming the importance of trusted information, ethical journalism and professional media in strengthening informed public participation.
