A 21-member Indian squad will compete across five events at the World Athletics Relays 2026 scheduled to start in Gaborone, Botswana, on Saturday.
The World Athletics Relays Gaborone 26, which ends on May 3, will be available to watch on live streaming in India.
A total of six relay events – men’s, women’s and mixed 4x400m and 4x100m – will be contested in Gaborone – which marks the first-ever World Athletics Relays to be held in Africa. Overall, this is the eighth edition of the team competition.
India will field teams in five of the six races 26, with the women’s 4x400m being the only exception.
Beyond the medals, Gaborone 26 also doubles up as a qualifying event for two major World Athletics events.
The top six from the two mixed relays will automatically qualify for the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championships in Budapest scheduled later this year. Meanwhile, the top 12 from all six events will qualify for the World Athletics Championships 2027 in Beijing, the People’s Republic of China.
A total of 723 athletes from 40 federations will be in action at the upcoming World Relays. Each nation can enter one team per event, with a maximum of eight athletes listed per team.
On Saturday, the top two teams in each of the four heats for all six events will advance to the finals and secure qualification for the 2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing. These teams will compete for medals and preferential lane-seeding positions at the World Championships on Sunday.
The teams which fail to make the final cut on the opening day will race in an additional round on Sunday, where the top two teams in each of the two heats will also qualify for Beijing 2027.

- Mixed 4x400m: Rajesh Ramesh, Vishal Thennarasu Kayalvizhi, Nihal William, Ansa Babu, Rashdeep Kaur, Kumari Saloni
The Indian squad for the World Athletics Relays 2026 features three Olympians in Amoj Jacob, Rajesh Ramesh and Srabani Nanda.
Animesh Kujur, who holds both of India’s national records in the men’s 100m and 200m sprints, will also feature in both the 100m relays.
At last year’s World Relays in Guangzhou, India only fielded teams in the men’s and mixed 4x400m events. Neither team made the finals or managed to bag a quota for the World Championships.
This year’s World Relays will see some of the top sprinters from across the world running at the Botswana National Stadium.
The list includes home favourite and Paris 2024 men’s 200m gold medallist Letsile Tebogo, Olympic champions Andre De Grasse and Shericka Jackson, among others.
