India’s challenge at the World Squash Championships 2026 ended on Sunday after Veer Chotrani lost his second-round match against world No. 1 Mostafa Asal in Giza, Egypt.
Veer Chotrani, 45th in the men’s squash rankings, lost 3-0 (11-5, 11-2, 11-4) to local favourite and defending champion Mostafa Asal at the Palm Hills Club and PGC Golf Central Mall to bow out of the competition.
The 24-year-old was the only one of the four Indian squash players in action at Giza to make it to the second round. Veer Chotrani beat countryman and India’s top-ranked player Abhay Singh 3-2 in the opening round to progress.
Velavan Senthilkumar and Ramit Tandon, meanwhile, exited in the first round itself.
World No. 50 Velavan Senthilkumar lost to France’s sixth seed and current world No. 5 Victor Crouin 3-0.
On the other hand, the 40th-ranked Ramit Tandon went down against Egypt’s Kareem El Torkey – a player ranked 19 places better off – by a 3-1 margin.
India’s campaign had ended in the second round at last year’s World Championships in Chicago too.
Anahat Singh, Veer Chotrani, Abhay Singh and Ramit Tandon all exited after competitive losses. Velavan Senthilkumar was ousted in the opening round.
Indian women’s squash players, including Anahat Singh, did not compete this year.
India are yet to win a medal in singles events at the World Squash Championships to date.
Squash is set to make its Olympic debut at LA 2028.
