New Zealand’s Zoe Hobbs sped to victory in the women’s 100m athletics final at the 2026 Commonwealth Games on Tuesday (28 July), creating some history for New Zealand in the process.
Her time of 10.93 was not only good enough to earn the first-ever gold medal for New Zealand in the 100 metres at a rainy Scotsoun Stadium, but was also more than enough to break the Oceania record in the event.
She called the moment “surreal,” admitting that she needs more time to process what just happened.
“I needed to see the result on the scoreboard because I needed it to feel real,” she said. “Just making the Commonwealth Games was hard enough. So to be walking away with any colour of medal, let alone a gold, is just incredible.”
England’s Amy Hunt claimed the silver medal with a time of 10.98 seconds, while Torrie Lewis set a new Australian record at 10.99 to earn the bronze medal.
Hunt, who already boasts a world championship medal in the 200m event, described having a “mix of emotions,” and ultimately being happy to join the club of “absolute legends” who have medalled in the event before her.
“That’s the name of the game in the 100; it’s a game of perfection, and I wasn’t perfect today.
But I’ll be perfect another time.”
