Shanti Pereira stopped short of saying it, but as fit as she is at the moment, the 30-year-old knows these Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya could very well be her last.
Which is why defending the 200m title – the first female athlete to accomplish the feat – on a rainy Sunday (27 September) evening in Japan meant all the more to the Singaporean.
“I mean, I don’t know,” Pereira said, when asked about the possibility that this could be her final Games appearance.
“I also came into this thinking I don’t know how many more Asian Games I’m going to do because the next one is in four years.
“That’s why this also had a lot of meaning to me because this is my fourth. I don’t know if there’s going to be a fifth.
“Look, I’m in the best condition possible. I’m good, I’m healthy, I’m able to defend my title. Like I said, I had a chance and to me that’s all that matters.”
