Gymnast Ellie Black won women’s all-around Commonwealth Games title at Glasgow 2026 on Sunday (26 July) eight years after doing the same at the 2018 Gold Coast edition.
That’s an eighth Commonwealth Games medal, fourth gold, for the Canadian who won team silver just yesterday.
The three-time world medallist scored 53.050 to best Australia’s Breanna Scott (52.900) and fellow Canadian Lia-Monica Fontaine just one tenth behind on 52.800.
“I was so excited to compete with Lia and do the all-around together,” said Black of her team-mate. “We were so happy to be in the same rotation and all the girls in our rotation were just incredible. It was such a fun final to be a part of.”
It was Fontaine, a world silver medallist on vault last year, who led the way for most of the competition scoring a sensational 14.300 on the first apparatus, the vault, courtesy of a sky-high double-twisting Yurchenko.
By the second rotation, the uneven bars, her compatriot Black was just 0.300 behind with Wales’s Ruby Evans in third. Scott, meanwhile, was sixth at the halfway stage.
The title was all to play for.
Evans, a world floor silver medallist, fell on her double spin on beam to put her out of contention. Black and Fontaine went clear with Scott scoring a huge 13.900 to leap into second place with one rotation to go.
That rotation was floor and the leading contenders shone but it was Black who emerged top of the pile.
“The medals are great, and we love that, and we want to represent country as best as possible but it’s so much bigger than that,” said four-time Olympian Black.
“Just seeing the support that we had and supporting one another and going out there and just doing the things that we’re doing, I think people don’t realise how hard the sport is, so we really have to be proud of ourselves for the fight and showing up and the resilience that we have going through these competitions.”
“It’s pretty crazy,” said Paris 2024 Olympian Scott of her second place, less than 24 hours after her team claimed gold in the women’s team competition. “I don’t really think it’s sunk in yet. There’s been so much that’s happened in the last 24 hours. It’s so great, I’m really happy.”
For her part, Fontaine was keeping a close eye on the scoreboard and aware of her progress.
“Honestly, I do look at the scores pretty often,” she told Olympics.com. “On vault I saw my score and I was really happy and then on bars I saw I was first, and then on beam I started to get a little nervous because I started to realise, OK, I’m pretty good in the scores.”
Managing to hold her nerve to win bronze, Fontaine said she was “feeling really good.
“It’s definitely a big opportunity and I really took it. I’m really happy of what I did and honestly, yeah, I’m speechless.”
