Former Indian cricket team captain Ajinkya Rahane and great Ravichandran Ashwin will be among a host of international stars in action in the inaugural European T20 Premier League (ETPL), which begins on August 26.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) approved T20 competition will feature six city-based franchises – two each from Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands. The ETPL 2026 will run until September 20.
There are no franchises from England or Wales in the inaugural edition. However, cricketers from the two countries can represent ETPL 2026 teams as overseas signings.
The player roster features some of the biggest names in international cricket, including Steve Smith, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Faf du Plessis, Heinrich Klaasen, Trent Boult, Liam Livingstone and David Miller.
Ashwin will captain the Dublin Guardians while Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Santner, George Munsey and Faf du Plessis will lead Amsterdam Flames, Belfast Wolves, Edinburgh Castle Rockers, Glasgow Cosmic and Rotterdam Dockers, respectively.
The ETPL 2026 franchises also feature several high-profile names in their ownership groups.Â
Former India captain and T20 World Cup-winning coach Rahul Dravid is associated with the Dublin Guardians.Â
Meanwhile, Australian great Steve Waugh is among the owners of Amsterdam Flames alongside hockey legend Jamie Dwyer, an Athens 2004 Olympic gold medallist.
Glenn Maxwell, who will captain Belfast Wolves, is also a co-owner of the franchise while former Australian opener Matthew Hayden is a co-owner and head coach of Glasgow Cosmic.Â
Rotterdam Dockers count Faf du Plessis, Jonty Rhodes, Heinrich Klaasen and Indian actor John Abraham among their co-owners.
The ETPL’s inaugural player draft was held in July. Twelve players each affiliated with Cricket Ireland, Cricket Scotland and the Royal Dutch Cricket Association (KNCB) were picked at the draft.
Each franchise’s 17-player squad is built around at least eight local players. Teams can have between five and seven overseas players, while every squad must also include at least one European Associate and one Global Associate player.
For matches, teams must field at least five local players in their playing XI, while a maximum of four overseas players can feature.
The league stage will see all six teams play each other twice. The table-toppers will advance directly to the final while the teams finishing second and third will meet in a Qualifier for the other spot in the title clash.
