In the Indian Premier League (IPL), where runs and strike rates often make headlines, a hat-trick can reset the momentum and hand control back to the fielding side in the space of three deliveries.
So far, there have been 23 IPL hat-tricks in 18 editions.
Lakshmipathy Balaji claimed the first IPL hat-trick during the inaugural edition in 2008, sealing Chennai Super Kings’ 18-run win over Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) in a home game.
After being asked to bat first, CSK scored 181/4 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium and needed to defend 19 off the last four balls with Balaji bowling the last over.
Irfan Pathan, who had already smashed eight off the first two balls of the over, was outfoxed with a slower ball and holed out to deep square leg. Piyush Chawla then lofted one towards long-off and the hat-trick was completed when VRV Singh top-edged one to wicket-keeper MS Dhoni.
Earlier in the match, Balaji had already swung the momentum in the 13th over by dismissing set batters Ramnaresh Sarwan and Shaun Marsh in the space of five balls, eventually finishing with figures of 5/24.
Yuzvendra Chahal’s hat-trick for the Punjab Kings against the Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025 is the latest addition to the list.
Playing for the PBKS against CSK in IPL 2025, Chahal got the wickets of Deepak Hooda, Anshul Kamboj and Noor Ahmad to complete his hat-trick in the 19th over and finish with figures of 4/32.
Chahal is also one of only three bowlers with multiple IPL hat-tricks, with the others being Amit Mishra and Yuvraj Singh.
Amit Mishra stands alone at the top of the IPL hat-trick chart, having claimed three across his career, each for a different franchise.
Amit Mishra’s treble – spread across stints with Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), Deccan Chargers and Sunrisers Hyderabad – remains the most by any bowler in the competition.
Yuvraj Singh is the only player to take two hat-tricks in the same season. Those were the only six wickets he picked up that season.
Both came for the Punjab Kings in 2009, a year that produced the most hat-tricks in a single IPL campaign. Rohit Sharma added another that season to take the tally to three, the highest in a single edition.
Makhaya Ntini was the first overseas player to claim a hat-trick, which came in the inaugural season.
Sam Curran’s hat-trick stands apart. The all-rounder achieved the feat against Delhi Capitals across two overs in 2019, making him the only player to complete a hat-trick spanning separate overs.
Among teams, Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals lead the way with five hat-tricks each, the joint-most by any team. Kolkata Knight Riders have conceded the most hat-tricks in the IPL, with four.
Ahmedabad and Bengaluru have been the most frequent venues for the feat, each hosting three hat-tricks over the years.
