Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner extended his ATP Masters 1000-level winning streak to 34 consecutive sets on Sunday (29 March), seeing off a spirited challenge from World No. 22 Jiří Lehečka in the men’s singles final at the 2026 Miami Open.

The 24-year-old World No. 2 dispatched his Czech opponent in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, becoming the first male player since double Olympic medallist Roger Federer in 2017 to achieve the rare “Sunshine Double” – winning at Indian Wells and the Miami Open in the same year.

With rain delaying the start by 90 minutes, before causing a further 80-minute delay in the second set, the four-time Grand Slam champion remained unruffled by the inclement weather, showcasing his ability to keep his mind strictly on the match.

“[Winning] the Sunshine Double for the first time, it’s incredible,” said Sinner, addressing the crowd during an on-court interview after the match. “It’s something I never would’ve thought [to win] because it’s difficult to achieve. We made it somehow, so I’m very happy.”

Taking to the court an hour and a half later than originally expected, the Italian service maestro set the tone early. He produced two aces in his first service game, before breaking Lehečka’s serve in the third game to gain the upper hand.

It was the first time the Czech player’s serve had been broken in five matches at the 2026 Miami Open, which brought the two-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist to life immediately.

Going up 40-0 in the fourth game, he looked to counter with a break of his own. But he couldn’t find a winner in three break points, handing control of the match back to Sinner, who closed out the first set in 46 minutes.

And while the momentum seemed undeniably in his favour heading into the second set, Mother Nature decided to throw the Italian star a çurveball. The heavens opened, bringing the match to a grinding halt.

Play resumed after a lengthy weather delay, with Sinner applying immediate pressure on Lehečka. The Czech player held strong until the ninth game, when he finally conceded a second break point to the higher-seeded player. Sinner then proceeded to earn back-to-back aces, taking the tenth game quickly to close out the second set in 47 minutes.

The win improved his record this season to 19-2, bringing him ever closer to World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz.
