The Pradhan Mantri Street Vendor’s AtmaNirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi) scheme in India has successfully completed three glorious years. It was launched on 1st June 2020, with the aim of supporting the street vendors who were battered by the lockdowns following COVID outbreaks. But it has emerged as a novel platform to support the nimble, but innovative entrepreneurs dot our country’s streets.
India is a country with almost 50 lakh official identified street vendors, according to Housing & Urban Development Minister Harjeet Singh Puri. It is only prudent to assume that many more than 50 lakh families derive their earnings from the street. But it’s not bad. Many of these vendors will eventually run successful establishments such as shops or restaurants, etc. A few will even become successful brands. In entrepreneurship, innovation on the street is accorded a high priority. Thus, supporting street entrepreneurs is essential and productive. The PM SVANidhi intends to achieve this function, and it has already benefited a massive number of identified vendors since 2020.
The grand anniversary event of the PM SVANidhi scheme, organized by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MOHUA), was a momentous occasion filled with achievements and recognition. The honorable Minister took center stage as he unveiled the much-anticipated PM SVANidhi mobile app, designed specifically for street vendors. This innovative application aimed to streamline the loan application process, making it easier for vendors to access financial assistance. Additionally, the app provided valuable information about the scheme, empowering street vendors with knowledge and resources to enhance their businesses. The crowd erupted in applause as the Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting this vital segment of society and enabling their economic growth.
Another highlight of the event was the launch of a remarkable facility on the PM SVANidhi portal in collaboration with the Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME). This facility allowed street vendors to register under the ‘Udyam’ category and obtain the esteemed ‘Udyam Assist’ certificate, further promoting their businesses. The crowd buzzed with excitement as the Minister highlighted the significance of this initiative in providing easy access to Udyam Registration Certificates, which would contribute to the overall development and expansion of street vendors’ enterprises. The Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises was commended for its invaluable partnership, emphasizing the government’s comprehensive approach to empowering street vendors and fostering entrepreneurship.
The event also presented an opportunity to acknowledge the outstanding performance and contributions of various states and lending institutions. The Minister felicitated the State Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, and Union Bank of India for their substantial efforts in providing the highest number of loans to street vendors. Their dedication and support were instrumental in realizing the vision of the PM SVANidhi scheme.
Notably, the remarkable achievements of Andhra Pradesh Grameen Vikas Bank among Regional Rural Banks, and the Stree Nidhi Credit Cooperative Federation Ltd. among the State Cooperative Banks were recognized and celebrated, highlighting their significant contributions towards empowering street vendors and driving economic prosperity in their respective regions.
Over the past three years, the PM SVANidhi scheme has achieved remarkable milestones, revolutionizing the support provided to street vendors. The scheme operates by facilitating working capital loans in 3 tranches to street vendors, enabling them to enhance and expand their businesses. A staggering number of over 36 lakh street vendors across India have benefitted from this scheme, receiving vital microcredits to fuel their entrepreneurial pursuits.
As of June 30, the PM SVANidhi scheme has made significant contributions with 48.5 lakh loan applications being sanctioned. Out of them, over 46.4 lakh loans have already been disbursed to deserving street vendors, amounting to a total financial infusion of Rs 5795 crores. The massive loan outflow suggests the much-needed nature of financial assistance to street vendors and the scheme’s contributions in empowering them to thrive in their businesses.
The PM SVANidhi scheme places great importance on digital knowledge. Recognizing the transformative power of digital transactions, the Ministry has made concerted efforts to train all beneficiaries of the scheme in conducting digital transactions effectively. This not only equips street vendors with the necessary skills but also grants them social acceptance and dignity in a digitally driven society.
By embracing digital technology, the scheme ensures that street vendors can seamlessly participate in the economy and access various financial services, opening new avenues of growth and opportunities for them. In a developing country like India, affirmative action is key to entrepreneurship, and the continuation of successful policy is an admirable step.
