For the first time, UNESCO Peru will participate in the Lima International Book Fair (FIL Lima), one of the country’s leading spaces for cultural and civic engagement. Through three activities, the Organization will bring to the public discussions of relevance to Peru and Latin America, ranging from the development of human-centred artificial intelligence to the preservation and revitalization of Indigenous languages.
Series “The Ethical Horizons of Artificial Intelligence: Technology at the Service of People”
As one of the main pillars of its first participation in the fair, UNESCO Peru will organize the series “The Ethical Horizons of Artificial Intelligence: Technology at the Service of People”, a space that will bring together specialists to discuss the opportunities offered by this technology, as well as the ethical, legal and governance challenges posed by its development and use.
The series will comprise two panel discussions aimed at fostering public reflection on the principles, rights and responsibilities that should guide technological transformation. The sessions will also address the need to establish ethical frameworks and governance mechanisms that make it possible to harness the benefits of artificial intelligence while responding appropriately to its potential risks.
The first session in the series will feature former President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti, who will be interviewed by Guiomar Alonso, UNESCO Representative in Peru. Organized in partnership with the UNESCO Chair on Knowledge and Innovation for Social Transformations at Universidad del Pacífico, the event will provide an opportunity to reflect on how technological innovation can be steered towards human well-being and sustainable development.
During the second session, Astrid Arbildo, Technical Coordinator at UNESCO Peru, will interview Dilmar Villena, a lawyer specializing in technology regulation and Executive Director of Hiperderecho. The event will continue the dialogue on the conditions needed to promote the transparent, inclusive, responsible and human rights-based development and use of artificial intelligence.
A Publication to Preserve the Language and Memory of the Taushiro People
At FIL Lima 2026, UNESCO Peru will present Awawantea’ke taushiro yaku. The Book of Taushiro Speakers: Language, Culture and History of the Taushiro People, a publication developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and AJE Group within the framework of the International Decade of Indigenous Languages 2022–2032.
The book documents the cultural and linguistic heritage of the Taushiro people through the voice of Amadeo García, the only current speaker of the language, who has collaborated for more than two decades on various initiatives aimed at safeguarding it. The publication seeks to raise awareness of this legacy and strengthen cultural and linguistic revitalization efforts.
The presentation panel discussion will feature linguist Luis Enrique López-Hurtado; Gerardo García, Director of Indigenous Languages at the Ministry of Culture; Alberto Suárez, Amarumayu Manager at Grupo AJE; and sociologist Yukiko Méndez. The discussion will be moderated by Jose Salazar, National Culture Officer at UNESCO Peru.
Through its first participation in FIL Lima, UNESCO Peru seeks to contribute to a broader understanding of the opportunities and risks associated with artificial intelligence, while promoting an ethical and human-centred technological transformation. It also reaffirms its commitment to fostering spaces for dialogue, disseminating knowledge, and protecting cultural and linguistic diversity.
