On 28 October 2026, children and young people from across Chile, from Arica to Punta Arenas, came together to share their experiences in school radio stations, podcasts, news programmes, magazines, newspapers and audiovisual projects. The event, organised by the School Media Observatory (OME) of Fundación MediaB, took place as part of Global Media and Information Literacy Week, promoted by UNESCO.
Throughout the day, students and teachers presented initiatives developed within their school communities, exchanged experiences and reflected on the challenges of communication in digital environments. The event highlighted the value of school media as spaces for expression, participation and learning, contributing to the development of communication skills, critical thinking and the sharing of stories from their local communities.
For Antonella Roa, an eighth-grade student at Efraín Campana Silva School in Osorno, Los Lagos Region, one of the most meaningful aspects was the opportunity to learn about other experiences and build connections with students from different regions. “It was a wonderful experience because we learned about what other schools are doing in different parts of Chile. We also discovered different forms of communication and activities carried out in other workshops, because not everyone does the same things, and some of the projects were really innovative,” she recalled.
From the far south of the country, Catalina Coyopae, a student at María Auxiliadora School in Punta Arenas, Magallanes Region, also highlighted the diversity of projects and the spirit of collaboration among school communities. “We loved seeing the incredible diversity of schools and the generosity of each community in sharing their ideas and projects. It showed us how something very simple can spark a much bigger movement, inspiring us to keep creating,” she said.
Beyond the learning opportunities, the event also offered students the chance to enjoy new personal experiences. This was the case for Nicolás Aravena, a fifth-grade student at José Francisco Pino Medina School in Coelemu, Ñuble Region, for whom the event marked his first trip to Santiago and his first time travelling by plane. “Being able to share this experience with other students from Chile was incredible and really special for me,” he said.
