The Indian women’s cricket team will begin its title defence in the Asian Games 2026 with a quarter-final clash against hosts Japan at the Korogi Athletic Park in Aichi, on Friday.

India head into the Asian Games on the back of a record-extending eighth Asia Cup title after beating Sri Lanka in the final of the tournament last week.
Third in the T20I team rankings, India are the highest-ranked nation in the eight-team women’s competition and are favourites to win the tournament. India will face Japan for the first time ever.
India will be led by regular T20 captain Harmanpreet Kaur. Smriti Mandhana, who surpassed compatriot Mithali Raj as the highest scorer in women’s international cricket and is also leading century-maker across formats, is the deputy.
Deepti Sharma – the all-time leading wicket-taker in women’s T20Is – and the top-ranked bowler in the format Shree Charani will be the team’s biggest threats with the ball.
Shafali Verma, who finished as the Player of the Series at the Women’s Asia Cup, will be another player to watch.
Meanwhile, minnows Japan will have their task cut out against a strong Indian side. Japan are currently 39th in the women’s T20I team rankings and will be playing cricket for the third time at the Asian Games.
Their best finish in women’s cricket at the Asian Games came in 2010 when they bagged the bronze medal, which is being played in a straight knockout format.
They have played seven T20Is this year, winning four, losing three and will be captained by Mai Yanagida.
