UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre held, from 17 to 19 March 2026 in Kingstown, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, a capacity-building workshop on the World Heritage Convention, bringing together key national actors from three Small Island Developing States (SIDS) working towards the preparation of their first World Heritage nominations: Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada and the Bahamas.Â
The workshop was organized in collaboration with the National Commissions for UNESCO of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Grenada, with financial support from the Governments of Azerbaijan and the United States of America.Â
With over 30 participants, the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines’  Minister of Youth, Sports, Culture and Creative Industries, Hon. Kashaka Cupid, and  Granada’s Minister of Tourism, Creative Economy and Culture, Hon. Adrian A. Thomas, joined other dignitaries in the opening, and stressed the importance of preserving heritage and the aim to advance on the joint transboundary nomination of the Grenadines Island Group as a World Heritage site between Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Grenada.Â
I am filled with gratitude for the timely and inspiring training on the World Heritage Convention with Grenada and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. A giant leap in safeguarding our shared heritage.
Janeil Henry-Rose, Secretary General of the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines National Commission for UNESCO.
The workshop addressed various aspects of the Convention and the nomination process such as the criteria, the preliminary assessment, research and documentation, management and conservation, and the operational guidelines, along with practical examples and exercises. Â
Through these exchanges, participants from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada and the Bahamas were able to identify concrete measures to advance their nomination processes.
The World Heritage Centre will continue to support and strengthen capacity among SIDS in the Caribbean subregion in this area. This initiative is aligned with the UNESCO Operational Strategy for SIDS (2023–2029), and contributes to the implementation of the World Heritage Action Plan for Latin America and the Caribbean (2023–2029).
