Suriname, a small country in South America, aims to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and mining, diversify its economy and develop various sectors essential for ensuring long-term prosperity, economic growth, and social development for its citizens and future generations. To realise this objective, Suriname has launched the Sustainable Infrastructure Development Plan Suriname 2050 (SIDPS 2050), which is a roadmap toward 2050 and will play a critical role in revolutionizing the infrastructure in the country.
The implementation of the SIDPS 2050 rests with the country’s Ministry of Public Works. According to Dr Riad Nurmohamed, Suriname’s Minister of Public Works, SIDPS 2050 is a roadmap that highlights the key development projects to be executed by 2050 on areas such as roads, bridges, jetties, drainage systems, traffic management, coastal protection, river dredging, subdivision plans and multi-story apartments, state and monumental buildings, urban greening, landscaping, waste management and climate change. With a total estimated investment of USD 7.5 billion, SIDPS 2050 aims for sustainable growth, employment, security and climate-resilient infrastructure, regardless of which government is in power.
SIDPS 2050 is strategically aligned with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), aiming to address both climate adaptation and mitigation through green infrastructure. Key goals include Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure (SDG 9), Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11), Climate Action (SDG 13), Life on Land (SDG 15), and Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17). These are supported by sub-goals such as Gender Equality (SDG 5), Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8), Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10), and Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions (SDG 16). By integrating these SDGs, the SIDPS 2050 aims to promote sustainable economic growth, environmental protection, social equity, and institutional strength, paving the way for long-term resilience and inclusive development in Suriname.
SIDPS 2050 presents a forward-looking vision for building climate-resilient and sustainable infrastructure throughout the country. Encompassing over 100 strategic projects, the plan focuses on enhancing national connectivity, environmental sustainability, and regional integration. Key initiatives include the extension and renewal of the East-West corridor, the development of a North-South connection, and the construction of new bridges over the Suriname, Quarantine, and Marowijne rivers. The plan also emphasizes the adoption of smart traffic systems, electric vehicle (EV) charging networks, and sustainable mobility options. Urban greening, circular economy practices, and improved waste management are central to the environmental goals. Additionally, the strengthening of coastal defences and upgrading of drainage infrastructure in Greater Paramaribo aim to boost resilience against climate impacts. Through its integration with the IIRSA framework, Suriname seeks to enhance cross-border connectivity with Brazil, Guyana, and French Guiana, positioning the country as a regional hub for sustainable development.
The Ministry of Public Works intends to implement these projects in Public-Private Partnership (PPP) as well as in cooperation with other ministries, organizations and our international financial partners such as the World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), and countries such as Brazil, Japan, China, India, the Netherlands, France and French Guiana, Belgium, Morocco etc. These partnerships must be maintained. There is thus a focus on international roads, logistics hubs, and trade corridors to boost regional economic cooperation.
SIDPS 2050 represents a transformative vision for the country’s future—one that prioritizes climate resilience, economic diversification, social inclusion, and regional integration. By aligning with global sustainability goals and focusing on strategic investments in roads, bridges, urban planning, green infrastructure, and international connectivity, the plan sets the foundation for long-term development. It reflects Suriname’s commitment to building a modern, inclusive, and environmentally responsible infrastructure system that not only supports national prosperity but also strengthens ties with neighbouring countries.
