India’s Isharani Baruah knocked women’s singles second seed Sung Shuo Yun of Chinese Taipei out of the Thailand Masters 2026 badminton tournament in the second round on Thursday.
The 22-year-old Indian shuttler, 48th in the badminton rankings, toiled for over an hour to beat her 34th-ranked opponent 21-13, 14-21, 21-14 at the Nimibutr Stadium in Patumwan to progress in the BWF Super 300 tournament.
The opening game was a tight affair, with both players locked at 11-all before Isharani edged ahead 14-13.
From there, the Indian shuttle found another gear, reeling off seven straight points to pocket the first game and seize early momentum.
Sung Shuo Yun responded in the second game, which once again remained evenly poised until 13-all. This time, it was the Chinese Taipei shuttler who surged late, winning seven of the next eight points to force a decider.
The third game, however, belonged entirely to the Indian badminton player who had earlier lost to Sung at the 2023 Guwahati Masters – the two’s only meeting prior to this.
Devika Sihag joined Baruah in the women’s singles quarter-finals later in the day with another stunning 21-14, 21-14 upset win against eighth-seeded Chinese Taipei player Tung Ciou-Tong. She is set to face local favourite and top seed Supanida Katethong in the final eight.
Anmol Kharb, however, fell short after a close 21-10, 19-21, 19-21 loss to Chinese Taipei’s fifth seed Huang Yu-Hsun. India’s Shriyanshi Valishetty also lost a three-game thriller 17-21, 22-20, 19-21 against Malaysia’s Karupathevan Letshanaa.
Meanwhile, world No. 60 Mithun Manjunath, who stunned the eighth seed Magnus Johannessen in the opening round, went down fighting against Paris 2024 bronze medallist Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia in men’s singles.
Lee Zii Jia, on the comeback trail following an injury layoff, was shocked in the opening game but salvaged the match by a 11-21, 21-16, 21-12 scoreline eventually.
With Kiran George, the seventh seed, succumbing to a 21-16, 21-11 loss to Indonesia’s Prahdiska Shujiwo, Tharun Mannepalli is the lone Indian challenge still alive in men’s singles.
Mannepalli beat Chinese Taipei’s Ting Yen-Chen 21-17, 14-21, 24-22 to make the quarters.
India’s doubles challenge at the Thailand Masters had fizzled out in the opening round.
