The 30-year-old shotgun shooter, also an Asian Games medallist, has received a formal clearance from the National Rifle Association of India to compete for Canada.
Shotgun shooter Angad Vir Singh Bajwa, an Olympian and two-time Asian champion in skeet shooting, has switched his nationality from India to Canada and will represent his adoptive country going forward.
Bajwa, who competed for India at Tokyo 2020, confirmed the news on social media.
The 30-year-old shooter’s decision to switch nationality received a formal clearance from the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI), which granted him the no-objection certificate (NOC) to compete for Canada.
Angad Vir Singh Bajwa last competed at the 68th National Shooting Championship Competitions at the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range in New Delhi last month. He finished fourth in the men’s skeet final.
Bajwa began competitive shooting in 2013 and announced himself on the continental stage at the Asian Shooting Championships in Kuwait City in 2015. Competing in the junior categories, he won an individual gold and the team title alongside Anantjeet Singh Naruka and Arjun Singh Mann.
In 2018, Bajwa went on to win the senior gold at the Asian Shotgun Championships, again in Kuwait City, with a perfect 60/60 in the final – an unprecedented score in the event at the time. It was also India’s first continental gold in skeet shooting.
He also competed at the Asian Games 2018 in Jakarta but missed out on a place in the final.
At the 2019 Asian Shooting Championships in Doha, Bajwa became the first Indian shotgun shooter to win back-to-back continental titles. The victory also secured India an Olympic quota for Tokyo 2020.
He also claimed a mixed team silver with Ganemat Sekhon at the 2019 Asian Championships.
Bajwa finished 18th in men’s skeet at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics after scoring 120/125 in the qualification.
At the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, People’s Republic of China, Bajwa won a men’s team bronze alongside Anantjeet Singh Naruka and Gurjoat Singh Khangura. Â
On the ISSF World Cup circuit, Bajwa has three medals to his name – mixed team and men’s team gold medals from New Delhi 2021 and a men’s team bronze from Cairo in the same year.
