Opening the meeting, the Director-General highlighted the unique role of National Commissions as bridges connecting UNESCO with governments, civil society, academia and local communities. The Deputy Director-General emphasized their importance in ensuring that UNESCO’s work remains relevant and responsive to global challenges.

A central highlight of the meeting was the launch of the new Guidelines, initiated by the Director-General, which reaffirm the essential role of National Commissions, clarify their functions, and provide practical tools to strengthen their effectiveness and impact.

Discussions focused on the UNESCO80 Roadmap as a collective vision to enhance the Organization’s relevance at country level, structured around improving efficiency, sharpening strategic focus, and strengthening coordination. Exchanges on Priority Africa further underscored the role of National Commissions in promoting peace, dialogue and sustainable development, while showcasing concrete initiatives across regions in areas such as youth engagement, partnerships, culture and education.

The Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information was also present and engaged directly with National Commissions, reinforcing dialogue across the network.

A clear message emerged: National Commissions are indispensable partners in translating UNESCO’s mandate into concrete action, ensuring that the Organization remains visible, impactful and close to the people it serves.
