AFCON 2025: Respect and friendship moments you may have missed

From Senegalese fans cleaning the stadium to Brahím Diaz consoling Tanzanian players, AFCON 2025 has shown that the values of friendship and respect are truly embedded in African football.

The Africa Cup of Nations has always been about more than football. It is a gathering of people and cultures, of music and languages, of shared tastes and lived histories drawn from across the continent.

In Morocco, that expansive spirit has been especially visible. Few editions of CAF’s biennial tournament have so clearly reflected Africa’s diversity, or carried such a quiet but powerful sense of mutual respect and friendship among nations and supporters alike.

While much of the spotlight has understandably fallen on the action on the pitch as the tournament moves into its knockout phase, many of the most telling moments have unfolded away from the cameras, in the stands, in gestures between fans and in small acts that speak to the values of respect and friendship.

It is some of those moments that Olympics.com brings into focus here.

Brahim Díaz consoles Tanzania players

At the final whistle of a match, having scored the decisive goal that sends your team into the quarter-finals of a major continental tournament, celebration is almost instinctive. A sprint towards the bench, embraces with teammates, a fist punched into the air in front of roaring supporters.

Unless, of course, you are Morocco’s Brahim Díaz.

The Real Madrid forward was once again decisive, his solitary goal enough to settle a stubborn Round-of-16 contest against Tanzania on Sunday (4 January). It was the kind of moment that often invites theatre. Instead, Díaz chose restraint.

As the whistle sounded, he walked the length of the pitch, offering handshakes and words of encouragement to Tanzania’s players, still processing the abrupt end of their AFCON campaign. In that quiet gesture, Díaz offered a reminder that victory does not require excess, and that respect can sit comfortably alongside success.

Senegal’s fans show the way

Senegal’s supporters have long been among the most recognisable presences at the Africa Cup of Nations, bringing colour, rhythm and movement wherever the tournament travels.

In Morocco, they have once again been impossible to miss, filling streets and stadiums with coordinated chants and synchronised dance, turning matchdays into shared performances.

But it was an act away from the spotlight that truly resonated. After Senegal’s 1–1 group-stage draw with DR Congo on 27 December, fans were seen staying behind to clean sections of the stadium, a simple gesture that travelled far beyond the stands.

In a competition where emotion can sometimes spill over, Senegal’s supporters offered a different kind of example, showing that passion and respect need not be at odds.
