Finally, Zhang Boheng had the last laugh against Oka Shinnosuke and Hashimoto Daiki.
On Monday (21 September), after finishing runner-up to Oka at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games then to Hashimoto at last year’s Artistic Gymnastics World Championships, Zhang beat both of them in one go to defend his Asian Games all-around title in Aichi-Nagoya.
The pride of the People’s Republic of China held off Oka by less than four-tenths of a point, 85.065 to 84.698, to top the podium. Tokyo 2020 champion Hashimoto placed third on 83.865.
None of the three were close to being at their very best, but Zhang will take it.
“It was a very intense competition and a very exciting one,” said the 26-year-old, who safely tucked away his last event, the horizontal bar, after Oka and Hashimoto ended their routine on the floor, unable to perform well enough to crank up the pressure on Zhang.
“For me personally, the pressure was also very high, because I picked up a small injury before coming here, and during the competition it did have some effect. But what deserves the most credit is that I overcame the difficulty.
“I think they performed very well today. There were some small imperfections, of course, but there is no doubt that the two of them are very strong.
“In the competition to come we cannot take it lightly, and we have to be prepared for a hard time.”
