On December 15-16-2025, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid an official visit to Jordan. This visit was also significant as it coincided with the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Both countries share a common worldview, anchored in respect for the United Nations Charter, a strong commitment to multilateralism, and active membership in the United Nations and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).

The visit of Indian PM Modi provided a further impetus to the robust relations between the two countries. During his meeting with King Abdullah II of Jordan. PM Modi stated that the meeting would impart new momentum and depth to India–Jordan relations, particularly as both countries mark the 75th anniversary of their political ties, and said that the two countries would  enhance cooperation in areas such as trade, fertilizers, digital technology, infrastructure, and people-to-people ties.

Modi’s visit to Jordan resulted in five significant outcomes. First, MoU on Technical Cooperation in the Field of New and Renewable Energy was signed between the two countries. Through the signing of this MoU, they agreed on the exchange and training of scientific and technical personnel, organization of workshops, seminars and working groups, transfer of equipment, know-how and technology on a non-commercial basis and development of joint research or technical projects on subjects of mutual interest.

Second, MoU on Cooperation in the field of Water resources Management & Development was signed. Both countries acknowledged the importance of cooperation between the two sides in areas such as water-saving agricultural technologies, capacity building, climate adaptation and planning and aquifer management. The third significant outcome was the signing of the Twinning Agreement between Petra and Ellora, two world heritage sites located in Jordan and India respectively. “The Twinning Agreement between Petra and Ellora opens new avenues for heritage conservation, tourism and academic exchanges,” PM Modi stated on social media platform X.

The fourth outcome was the renewal of the Cultural Exchange Programme for the years 2025-2029. Both countries supported the idea of expanding cooperation in the fields of music, dance, theatre, art, archives, libraries and literature, and festivals. The fifth important outcome of Modi’s Jordan visit was the signing of a Letter of Intent on Cooperation in the field of sharing successful digital solutions implemented at population scale for digital transformation. The two countries expressed interest in expanding and upgrading the infrastructure and the capacity building programs of the India and Jordan Centre of Excellence in Information Technology, hosted at Al Hussein Technical University. Further, India and Jordan discussed the road map for collaboration in the field of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI). In this context, both sides welcomed the signing of a letter of intent for entering into an agreement on sharing of Indian experience of DPI. Both sides agreed to collaborate in ensuring a safe, secure, trusted and inclusive digital environment. India highlighted the important role of capacity building in sustainable development and expressed commitment to continue collaboration in this field through the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) Programme in various fields including information technology, agriculture, and healthcare. The Jordanian side appreciated the increase of ITEC slots from 35 to 50 with effect from the current year.

India and Jordon also committed to strengthen their economic and trade relations. It was agreed by both countries to diversify the trade basket. The strong bilateral trade engagement between India and Jordan, currently valued at USD 2.3 billion for 2024, make India the third largest trading partner for Jordan. The two countries also agreed on the early convening of the 11th Trade and Economic Joint Committee in the first half of 2026, to monitor progress in economic and trade relations.

King Abdullah II praised India’s leadership in the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) and the Global Biofuels Alliance (GBA). India welcomed Jordan’s expression of willingness in joining the ISA, CDRI and GBA. The two sides recognised biofuels as a sustainable, low-carbon option to achieve decarbonisation commitments and deliver greater economic and social development for the people of both countries.

PM Modi’s Jordan visit has thus strengthened strategic, economic, and security ties between the two countries. It has laid the foundations for robust ties between the two countries in the forthcoming years. India has also further strengthened its strategic foothold in West Asia.
