The Socotra Archipelago celebrated Socotri Language Day in an extensive cultural event organized by the Socotri Language Center for Studies and Research, under the patronage of the local authorities, the supervision of the Department of Culture, and support from the Saudi Program for the Development and Reconstruction of Yemen. Held on March 3rd, the annual day dedicated to the Socotri language highlighted one of the oldest South Arabian languages and its deep cultural and intellectual significance, which has long served as a cornerstone of Socotri identity.
UNESCO participated in the event through a pre‑recorded video message, reaffirming its commitment to supporting efforts aimed at safeguarding and preserving the Socotri language—one of the rare cultural treasures that distinguishes Socotra, alongside its unique natural environment and exceptional biodiversity. In its message, UNESCO emphasized that the Socotri language is far more than a means of communication; it is a living vessel of oral knowledge, poetry, stories, songs, and values passed down through generations.
The celebration also served as an opportunity to announce a set of major achievements realized over the past two years, beginning with the “Alphabet Workshop” held in late 2024 in Hadibou with UNESCO’s support. The workshop brought together linguistic and educational experts from Yemeni, regional, and international universities, alongside poets, local specialists, and more than 35 participants from across Socotra. They studied the linguistic sounds of the language and visited cultural and natural sites to better understand the close connection between environment, culture, and language—culminating in the development of a written alphabet for Socotri.
During the event, the Socotri Language Center unveiled its new digital platform, in addition to two Socotri keyboard layouts—one for laptops and another for mobile phones—representing a major step toward integrating the language into the digital sphere and enhancing its use in everyday communication and education. The Center also announced the formation of a committee dedicated to developing educational curricula in Socotri, paving the way for integrating the language into academic and community settings in the future.
The celebration featured performances of traditional Socotri arts that added an authentic cultural touch, with local groups presenting a variety of indigenous heritage pieces. On the second day, a special showcase was held featuring the traditional arts of Al‑Mawlid and Al‑Hadanah, both considered essential elements of Socotra’s cultural heritage.
On the sidelines of the cultural evenings, the Center organized a scientific symposium on the phonetics of contemporary Arabic languages, during which three research papers were presented and discussed, offering a platform for scholars and enthusiasts to exchange knowledge and expertise. The heritage‑themed evenings are scheduled to continue for an entire week in celebration of Socotra’s rich cultural and linguistic legacy.
UNESCO reaffirmed its commitment to continuing its collaboration with the Governorate of Socotra, the Socotri Language Center, and local and international partners to support ongoing efforts to safeguard the language and promote linguistic and cultural diversity as a fundamental pillar of shared human heritage.
