Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen is calling time on a remarkable career.

The two-time Olympic champion confirmed on Wednesday (15 April) that he will step away from badminton at the age of 32, a decision shaped by physical limits he can no longer ignore.

“I have been advised to focus on my long-term health,” he posted on social media. “I have now reached a point where my body won’t allow me to continue.”

Axelsen revealed that despite months of rehabilitation, his condition did not improve. “Due to my recurrent back issues, I am no longer able to compete and train at the highest level.” He underwent endoscopic surgery, multiple injections, and explored new training methods and treatments, “basically trying everything to become pain-free.”

Since then, he has been unable to return to the level required for elite competition. Doctors have warned that the pain he is experiencing could require another surgery, and if complications arise, “even a more serious” procedure. “That is why I am unfortunately forced to make this extremely difficult decision,” he told Badminton Europe.

Axelsen on his career: “I have accomplished everything”

Axelsen retires as one of badminton’s most decorated players. Alongside Olympic gold medals at Tokyo 2020 in 2021 and Paris 2024, he claimed world titles in 2017 and 2022 and spent 183 weeks as world number one. He was also a three-time European champion and the first men’s singles player to win all BWF Super 1000 tournaments

“I have accomplished everything,” he added to his social post.

Since the day I first picked up a racket, I knew my dream was to become the best in the world. I have given everything to this sport in pursuit of that goal, every single day, every session, every match. It has never just been a career to me. It has been my life, and I have left no stone unturned.”

The decision, though inevitable, was not easy and “at times felt unfair,” he said.

“At the same time, my body has done an incredible job over many years, and I see it as a huge privilege to have been able to play, train, and win so many major tournaments at the highest level. Very few people get to experience what I have experienced and meet so many amazing people. That’s why I look back on my career with joy.”

He also expressed gratitude to his coaches, doctors, fans, family, and friends, as well as to badminton itself, for the lessons the sport has given him.

While this marks the end of his playing career, Axelsen made clear it is not a farewell to badminton altogether. What comes next for the champion, however, remains to be seen.

“I will always be around one way or the other. I gave everything to badminton, and badminton has given me everything back.”
